Join the San Marco Preservation Society, Jacksonville Historical Society, San Marco Merchants Association, and City of Jacksonville for a special centennial celebration of Jacksonville's first automobile & pedestrian bridge: the Acosta Bridge!
On July 1, 1921, the St. John's River Bridge opened with much fanfare and celebration. It was an engineering marvel as the first lift bridge in the state of Florida.
The San Marco Preservation Society will mark the occasion with an antique car parade over the Acosta Bridge and festivities in San Marco Square on June 26. The parade will begin at MOSH, and enter the bridge going northbound. Once it crosses the river, it will circle back on Bay Street and cross the bridge again, traveling southbound. It will continue down San Marco Blvd. to San Marco Square, where the cars will park and be on display. Festivities and light refreshments will be offered in Balis Park. The parade begins at 11:00 a.m.
From June 24 to 26, keep an eye out for special lighting on the Acosta Bridge, thanks to the Jacksonville Transportation Authority! The Acosta will be lit in signature "Acosta blue" and yellow as a nod to the original bridge's former nickname, "Yellow Monster" (because of its yellow paint).
