ACDE Association of Dental Educators -The New (and Old) Tobacco Products: Health Effects and Helping Patients

Course Summary:

The products and patterns of tobacco use are changing rapidly. The dental team is likely to encounter patients who use or have questions about alternative tobacco products, like electronic cigarettes (vaping) and cannabis. Dental professionals must understand the health implications of non-cigarette products to provide proper treatment and counseling. Brief, simple, and effective strategies can increase patients' motivation to quit and achieve a tobacco-free future.


Course Presenter:

BENJAMIN CHAFFEE, DDS, MPH, PhD, Dr. Chaffee is an associate professor in the Division of Oral Epidemiology and Dental Public Health at the University of California San Francisco. His research interests include tobacco-related behaviors and decision-making among adolescents, particularly in relation to new and emerging tobacco products. Dr. Chaffee is affiliated with the UCSF Center for Tobacco Control Research & Education, Global Health Sciences Institute, the Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the Center to Address Disparities in Children's Oral Health. He serves as Director of the UCSF School of Dentistry Program in Global Oral Health and has authored more than 70 research publications.

Course Topics & Objectives: 

Upon completion of the course, participants will be able to:

Recognize the features and current-use trends of emerging tobacco and nicotine products, including electronic cigarettes

Understand the oral and overall health implications of e-cigarettes, cannabis, and other tobacco products

Identify in-office strategies to address patient tobacco use, including effective forms of communication and cessation assistance

Exact email is necessary REGISTRATION CANCELLATION: Tuition is refundable if a course is canceled by  the Office of CE. A $50 fee will be assessed for any course  cancellation.  All payments by check or cash are deposited into the Texas A&M account  and CANNOT be refunded.  “No Shows” for a course  forfeit all tuition. Confirm notification of cancellation by e-mail. The CE Office cannot be held responsible for a  non-refundable airline ticket.
