Silver Diamine Fluoride is the New Black in Medical Management of Caries: What, Why, When, How?

Course Summary:

Oral health has entered a new normal with a need for the reduction of aerosol-producing treatments. Our focus as dentists should be on non- and minimally invasive solutions. To achieve change, clinicians should invest in Silver diamine Fluoride which is the soul of the medical management of caries.

This session will cover the WHAT: history of development, mechanisms, evidence, and chemistry of SDF; the WHY: advantages and disadvantages with supportive evidence; the WHEN: clinical uses, indications and contraindications; the HOW: incorporation into restorative practice, clinical protocols, and clinical tips from practicing dentists all over the globe. The session will include wide coverage of multiple clinical questions addressing the challenges associated with SDF.

Dr. Noureldin BDS, MSD, MS, PhD, Clinical Associate Professor, Vice Head, Director of Predoctoral Program and Director of Cariology in the Department of Public Health Sciences of College of Dentistry Texas A&M. specializes in three areas of dentistry, operative dentistry, preventive dentistry and cariology (caries management). She received her dental degree (1993) at Faculty of Oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt. Noureldin began her career as a dentist and a faculty and earned Master of Science degree in Operative Dentistry, Cairo University, Egypt (1998). Earned Master of Science in Biomaterials (2003) from Baylor College of Dentistry (Texas A&M University, USA) and PhD degree in Operative dentistry (2007), joint supervision between Baylor College of Dentistry and Faculty of oral and Dental Medicine, Cairo University. Noureldin is a dentist, scholar, educator and a dedicated mentor. Her research has been broadly concerned with dental caries and white spot lesion prevention and treatment. She is the principal investigator in multiple research grants and projects that has been supported by Industry contracts and intramural grants. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and contributed to science by writing a book chapter in the recently published Medical Management of Caries: Silver Diamine Fluoride in 2019. Noureldin is the director of the Prevention Program at COD. In recognition of her leadership qualities and accomplishments, Noureldin was honored with Distinguished Teaching Excellence Award (2016) and Clinical Faculty Research Award in 2019 by Texas A&M College of Dentist.

Learning objectives:

At the conclusion of the session, the participant will be able to:

1. Explain the indications, benefits, and risks for Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) to patients.

2. Describe the evidence and level of success for using SDF to treat or prevent dental caries.

3. Demonstrate the techniques for applying SDF and SMART technique.

4. Guide patients through deciding on topical-only versus invasive caries management.

5. Describe key research questions about SDF that are under current investigation.

6. Identify challenges associated with Silver Diamine Fluoride
