Overview of the programme:
WORKSHOP 1 – EMBEDDING READING CULTURE- The foundations for teaching children to ‘become readers’. 2nd October, 1pm-4pm
-Resourcing a strong reading culture at all levels, library, book corners, curriculum, story time, reading lessons, book led writing curriculum.
-Creating a reading environment that sings reading and promotes text.
-Creating places and spaces to read and opportunities to read
-Developing reader identity / knowing your own reader identity and that of others
- Building informal book talk
WORKSHOP 2 – UNDERSTANDING THE PRINCIPLES AND RESOURCING OF TEACHING READING BEYOND PHONICS
4th December, 1pm-4pm
-Understanding the purpose of teaching reading beyond Phonics
-Recognising and building a spine of quality texts that challenge children to become even better readers
-Exploring methods for structuring reading spines and text choices
-Looking at models for pitching texts so that challenge in reading is built into the structure of the reading curriculum
WORKSHOP 3 - EMBEDDING READING FLUENCY AND VOCABULARY INSTRUCTION
29th January, 1pm-4pm
-Unpicking the key importance of vocabulary in being a fluent reader.
-The role fluency plays as the bridge from decoding to comprehension
-Modelling vocabulary instruction linked to the principles of retrieval practice
-Modelling whole class reading fluency practice
-Text choice for fluency
-Assessing and planning for fluency practice Y2 – 6
WORKSHOP 4 – UNDERSTANDING AND DEVELOPING COMPREHENSION
2nd April, 1pm-4pm
-Modelling situation modelling and comprehension monitoring
-Supporting the teaching of situation modelling and comprehension monitoring
-Unpicking and defining the key components of inference
-Exploring effective formal book talk through reading lessons
-Modelling and unpicking close reading comprehension
-Modelling and unpicking extended reading comprehension
Workshop 5 – SUPPORTING WEAKER READERS TO KEEP UP IN KS2
20th May, 1pm-4pm
-Diagnosing the underlying causes for pupils who find reading hard
-Triaging pathways for additional support
-What must be in place for children who have not yet mastered Decoding
-Strategies for supporting pupils who find fluency particularly challenging
-Strategies for those pupils who find comprehension a struggle
Workshop 6 – READING AND ASSESSMENT V READING FOR PLEASURE
26th June, 1pm-4pm
-When we assess reading, what are we assessing?
-Should reading assessment always be the same throughout primary school?
-How should we assess reading at different stages? What do we want to find out and how will we use the outcomes to inform next steps?
-Statutory Assessment of reading alongside building a reader and the reading for pleasure culture
