Join us for a consciousness raising circle about all things disability, mental health and field work! Field work (research outside of a classroom, laboratory or institutional setting) is a large component of many of the natural and social sciences, especially when pursuing research (and higher degrees by research/HDRs) within these fields. Field work can often be difficult for entirely able, neurotypical, and mentally well people… so let’s talk about how we can make field work more accessible, and other topics that arise when looking at fieldwork from a disability/ mental health/neurodivergent perspective. There is a lot of joy in fieldwork too!
This event is hybrid, so you can join us at the ANUSA Boardroom in person, or via zoom. Details on accessibility and zoom link below.
This event is non-autonomous (all ANU students welcome). This event is aimed at HDR students, honours students and later-years undergrad students. Other students are also welcome, but please be respectful and do not speak over those with lived experiences.
The ANUSA boardroom is wheelchair accessible via lift. There are often things on the balcony which can make the walkway a bit cluttered- there will be a clear path though. The room is normally well lit by natural light, but there is also overhead fluorescent lighting. There is a range of different chairs with backs/ arms etc. There is an accessible toilet nearby, although this is behind heavy manual doors (accessibility fail).

What is a consciousness raising circle?
A consciousness-raising circle is a discussion in a group setting, where we come together to share personal experiences, analyse structures, and collectively raise awareness of a predetermined topic. Our topic will be accessible fieldwork, and the chair guiding the session will have prompts/or questions. We will go around and ask everyone to share their thoughts (if they would like- no pressure) so everyone has a chance to contribute. They originated through the feminist movement in the USA in the 1960s.
