Celebrated as one of the most influential musicians of the 20th Century, Leonard Bernstein rocked the world of music with his edginess, intensity, and expression. Composer, conductor, pianist, author, and educator Bernstein changed the way the world heard music and taught us to listen with a new set of ears that were open to hearing ideas that pushed the status quo. A master craftsman, Bernstein’s pieces appear easy and familiar to listeners, but below the surface provide complex musical structures that are demanding and challenging for performers. His style brought new energy and life to American music blending genres that crossed the popular with the classical and the light-hearted with the serious.
Bernstein gave us a greater appreciation of music, but perhaps his greatest gift was his music’s ability to evoke peace and an understanding of our shared humanity. His music accented our kindness, resilience, empathy, compassion, and love that knew no barriers or boundaries.
