This folly on the hill above Buxton can be seen from miles around and it's the perfect little hill to sit and watch the sunrise.
About this Event
Event Photos

I have teamed up with ACAI Outdoorwear to offer a women's only walk to enjoy a sunrise at Solomon’s Temple on Grin Low Hill. This lovely little folly is the perfect spot to watch the day begin with a coffee and breakfast on the hill. We’ll then head off on a short circular walk that loops back to the car park, taking in the views up the valley of the leachate plume - a calcite curiosity!

For those who wish to continue the adventure, Pooles Cavern is a show cave nearby that is a great place to visit! I’m happy to organise tickets for this for those who wish to join.

ACAI are offering a special discount code* to all participants so you can treat yourself to something from their incredible range of women's outdoor wear! As well as a goody bag for all ladies who attend.

*Polite notice: please only book your ticket if you can definitely make it on the day as there is limited availability. Discount codes and goody bags will be given out upon arrival at the meeting place.

Distance: 6km/3.6 miles

Ascent: 140m/450ft

Level of difficulty: Easy/Moderate/Challenging - Short inclines but otherwise suitable for all fitness levels.

Who will be your guide?

I’m Emily (AKA @trigsandteeth on Instagram!) and I’m a Hill and Moorland Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire other women to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!

Transport:

We'll be meeting at Grin Low Car Park, Grin Low Rd, Buxton SK17 6UJ. (Google Maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/8WmXynDhqgwFQhuf6 ) This car park has an honesty box so bring some cash (correct at time of writing).

We will meet at 5.45, ready to set off at 6am.

What to bring:

  • Hiking boots or trail shoes with ankle support
  • Snacks/breakfast
  • Hot drink (optional...but coffee is needed!)
  • Rucksack
  • Water (at least 1L)
  • Waterproofs and warm layers
  • Hat and gloves
  • Sun hat/sun cream
  • Walking Poles (optional)
  • A small first aid kit with any personal Medic*tion

Terrain:

Mostly trails and footpaths, some uneven terrain. One fairly steep descent. There are stiles on this walk.

Toilets:

There are public toilets at the car park, but they may not be open when we start the walk. We may have to embrace the good old ‘wild wees’ whilst we’re out! There are plenty of little hidden spots for us to squat in private!

Safety:

The whole point of the walk is to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone so we will keep to a steady pace to suit the group. It's about taking in the views, learning about the history and geology of the area and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety and with all outdoor activities, there can be risks involved. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on this walk, please either consult your doctor or let me know your concerns. Please inform me of any medical conditions prior to the walk.

I am a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and I am level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained so I will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Dogs:

Dogs are welcome to come along, but we will be spending some time sitting around waiting for the sunrise and there can sometimes be livestock, so they will need to be on a close lead for some of the time.

Refund Policy:

This is a free walk but spaces are extremely limited and there will be a waiting list. If you can no longer attend, please give as much notice as possible to give us the opportunity to fill your place.

And FINALLY:

This walk will be going ahead whatever the weather, unless I deem the conditions dangerous so be ready to embrace the good old British weather! If I do have to cancel the walk for safety reasons, I will suggest one more date for the walk to be rearranged.
