Laguna Community Concert Band Brings Music and Magic to Thurston Middle School“Abracadabra” will feature entertainment for the whole family.
LAGUNA BEACH, Calif. – September 28, 2025 – The Laguna Community Concert Band invites families to a spellbinding afternoon of music, magic and fun on Sunday, October 12, at 2 p.m. in the Thurston Middle School Gym, 2100 Park Avenue in Laguna Beach.
Local magician Ian Galloway will serve as emcee for “Abracadabra,” a family-friendly collection of spooky-season tunes featuring performances with students from the Thurston Middle School Band. The concert is the second in a series of collaborative concerts the band has planned for the 2025–2026 concert season.
“This is truly a concert for the whole family,” said conductor Jennifer Baker. “There will be a costume parade during ‘Pixar’s Movie Magic’ and kids will have a chance to conduct the band with their magic wands during the ‘Harry Potter’ theme.”
The 90-minute program is packed with pop-infused favorites, including music from “Phantom of the Opera” and “Wicked” and scores by composer Danny Elfman. Baker has also folded in light classical touches, including a rock arrangement of Beethoven’s “Toccata in D Minor,” Ralph Vaughan Williams’ “Fantasy on a Theme by Thomas Tallis,” and “La Virgen de la Macarena,” featuring trumpet soloist Henry Miller.
Thurston Middle School students will join the band on stage for the title piece, “Abracadabra.”
“Our mission has always been to connect with the community,” said board member Jay Kramer, who leads the band’s community outreach. “Collaborations like this, bringing together local performers, students, and families, are at the core of our mission. We love bringing people together for an enjoyable celebration of music.”
Admission to the concert is free, although donations to cover band expenses like music and equipment are greatly appreciated. Ruby’s Diner will be on hand to pass out free milkshake coupons, and attendees who visit Ruby’s after the show can support the band by showing their concert program. Ruby’s will donate 20% of all concert attendee purchases to the band.
