*This event is part of Muziekpublique’s Nomadic Season*Aboubakar Traoré, hailing from Bobo-Dioulasso, is a master of the kamélé n’goni and an extraordinary vocalist. With his music, he breathes new life into the rich legacy of the Mandingue griots, while giving voice to the daily challenges of his people and paying homage to the ancestors who have shaped the history of Burkina Faso and Africa. His infectious energy, alongside his band Balima, brings a fresh and vibrant take on the traditional sounds of his homeland, leaving audiences filled with joy.
Backed by an increible lineup of musicians, including Zonatan Dembélé (bass), former member of Rokia Traoré’s ensemble (Mali), Désiré Somé (guitar), member of Bai Kamar Jr.’s band, Guillaume Codutti (percussions), and Geoffrey Desmet (balafon, djembe)—both key players in the percussive collective Sysmo—Aboubakar Traoré & Balima seamlessly fuse tradition with modern influences. The group’s ability to reimagine cultural heritage with a innovative flair, earned them a nomination for the Octaves de la Musique in 2021, and an official showcase at Visa For Music in 2023.
Their latest album, SABABU, is a powerful and vibrant ode to the pursuit of opportunities that shape our lives. It invites listeners to recognize and embrace the limitless possibilities that can lead us to new horizons. A captivating blend of hypnotic rhythms and intense ballads, SABABU mixes traditional roots with contemporary sounds. In this deeply emotional and evocative work, Aboubakar Traoré addresses universal themes of injustice, love, heritage, and the search for freedom. With poignant lyrics, he condemns the exploitation of African resources and the political and economic dominance over the continent, all while celebrating the resilience of its people and the richness of their traditions.
SABABU is also a tribute to life, love, and the strength of family and community bonds. Driven by intense grooves, the album takes listeners on an immersive musical journey. Each rhythm is an invitation to move, to come together, and to celebrate life in all its beauty.
