What is Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health First Aid?
Mental health first aid is the help given to someone developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis. The first aid is given until appropriate professional treatment is received or until the crisis resolves.
This course teaches you how to assist an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander adult who is developing a mental health problem or in a mental health crisis.
Who can attend?
The training is open to community members and health service providers that work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Accreditation
The Aboriginal Mental Health First Aid (AMHFA) is an accredited course based on the international MHFA Guidelines. Certificates are available after the course.
About the facilitator
This two-day workshop is facilitated by WA Centre for Rural Health (WACRH) Associate Lecturer Annette McVicar who works in Aboriginal Community Engagement. Annette is a Mununjali and Minjungbal women from Yugambeh Country. Annette has extensive experience in Aboriginal Cultural Education and Training.
Why do this workshop?
The program has been well evaluated both in workplace and community settings and found to be effective in improving mental health literacy, reducing stigma and increasing helping behaviours.
This training is being presented by Karratha Central Healthcare with funding support from the Australian Government Department of Health.
