Mike Leigh's classic play from 1977 is a camp horror show of suburban social climbing. Please join us for a matinée of condescension, cheese and pineapple on cocktail sticks, gin and tonics, brown furniture, furry rugs, beautiful lips, Demis Roussos and some very bad dancing!
Beverly Moss invites her new neighbours, Angela and Tony, who moved into the road just two weeks ago, over for drinks. She has also invited her neighbour Susan (Sue), divorced for three years, whose fifteen-year-old daughter Abigail is holding a party at home. Beverly's husband Laurence comes home late from work, just before the guests arrive. The gathering starts off in a stiff fashion as the virtual strangers tentatively gather, until Beverly and Laurence start sniping at each other. Beverly puts a Demis Roussos album on the turntable and begins to dance. As the drinks flow and the alcohol begins to takes effect, she breaks off giving beauty tips to Angela to flirt more and more overtly with Tony, as Laurence sits impotently by. Meanwhile, Sue's anxiety about her teenage daughter's party over the road leads to Laurence and Tony intervening with dramatic consequences.
