Mexican-American saxophonist Abel Mireles is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most promising musicians of his generation. After nearly a decade in the vibrant New York City music scene, Abel has relocated to El Paso, Texas, where he serves as the Director of Jazz Ensembles at the University of Texas at El Paso. He is also the Artistic Director of The Jazz Exchange and the Director of Border Entertainment. As a recording artist with NYC's Sunnyside Records, Abel released his solo album Ánimo, showcasing his unique blend of Mexican-American folkloric music and jazz.
Abel’s educational journey took him through the esteemed jazz programs at the University of Texas at El Paso and William Paterson University, where he studied under jazz greats such as Bill Charlap, Cecil Bridgewater, James Weidman, Armen Donelian, and saxophonists Rich Perry and Vincent Herring. His multifaceted career includes producing and arranging Your Way by the Candice Reyes Quintet, featuring renowned bassist Christian McBride.
In addition to his jazz career, Abel has worked extensively in the pop and soul world, collaborating with music director Ray Chew on "Showtime at the Apollo." He has performed alongside artists such as Brandy, Otis Redding III, Valerie Simpson, and Dionne Warwick. His national television credits include appearances on NBC's "Christmas at Rockefeller Center" and "Showtime at the Apollo" with stars like John Legend and Martina McBride.
Throughout his career, Abel has performed at iconic venues including Carnegie Hall, The Apollo Theater, and Smalls Jazz Club, and has toured across the U.S. and Mexico. He has also led clinics at institutions like UTEP and Western New Mexico University and performed at notable events such as the Festival de Jazz Chihuahua.
In addition to his performance career, Abel co-founded The Jazz Exchange with his wife Candice, a mission-driven organization aimed at building communities through music. He also co-founded Yardbird Entertainment with trombonist Peter Lin, working to connect new jazz audiences with emerging talent. Through these endeavors, Abel continues to impact the jazz community both locally and internationally
