About this Event
Described by the New York Times as a “critic of her grandfather’s gospel”, Sophie Freud, was, in reality, a quite brilliant social worker and social critic with her own independent perspective who served on the faculty at Simmons College School of Social Work. Jane Abrams, a student of Sophie Freud’s at Simmons will share the story of Dr. Freud’s life and professional career and summarize her intellectual contributions, including her inquiries into the passions of women and challenges to traditional gender categories that were decades ahead of their time. Finally, Abrams will reflect on her own long relationship with Dr. Freud as a teacher, mentor and friend as well as discuss how Dr. Freud was affected professionally and personally by her relationship to her famous grandfather.
