Please join us at the Gallery Friday, November 7th from 5:30-8pm!As a part of the "A Year at Gardenview" exhibit, we will be hearing from Nancy Broadbent, the Lakewood artist who was so inspired by Gardenview Horticultural Park that she developed the idea for this show. Come hear her artist talk and learn about her inspiration, her processes and her art practice!
Nancy says – “I draw my inspiration primarily from nature and natural forms as an antidote to the ruin of the world that we live in, reminding me that despite appearances, we have not been abandoned here. One of the places that has provided much of that inspiration over the past several years is Gardenview Horticultural Park. It’s a delight I want to share, however imperfectly, with more of our community.”
We are also happy to be hosting Shoko Otsuka Morton, an internationally-shown Ikebana artist, who will be demonstrating and discussing Sogetsu Ikebana, a modern form that uses materials on-hand, draws out the freedom of expression in each individual, and continues to evolve with the motto "Always new, always beautiful." and is never constrained by preconceptions.
If you are curious about the history, the mission, or the vision of Gardenview Horticultural Park or the story of its founder, Henry A. Ross, director Marla Tooman will be joining us to give the background of the park and answer questions. Henry defined himself as “an ordinary individual without money…whose only asset was a vision of an ‘oasis of beauty’ to be enjoyed not only by its present visitors, but by future generations as well.” Single handedly, he transformed the swampy property into numerous gardens of various kinds and sizes. These gardens fit together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle, becoming one six acre masterwork. There is also a ten acre arboretum containing flowering trees under planted with spring bulbs.
