(Jean-Luc Godard, 1961, France/Italy, 84 minutes)New 4K restoration!
Surely the warmest and most accessible film of director Jean-Luc Godard’s 40+ feature films, his 1961 effort A Woman is a Woman (Une femme est une femme) is something of a honeymoon picture with his new wife, Anna Karina, whom he married around the time of the film’s release. It was also the first Karina/Godard collaboration the public saw, as their first film together, Le Petit soldat, faced censorship problems that delayed its release until 1963. A Woman is a Woman, on the other hand, was a hit from day one, winning the Jury Prize and Best Actress for Karina for at its 1961 Berlin Film Festival premiere. Dancer Angela (Karina) wants to have a child, but finds her boyfriend (Jean-Claude Brialy, Claire’s Knee) is an unwilling participant. She decides to ask his friend (Jean-Paul Belmondo, Breathless) instead.
In French with English subtitles.
