A Wizarding Walk with Archeologist Dr Tim | 4km | Women Only

A beautiful walk exploring the history of Alderley Edge with the expert knowledge of local historian and archeologist, Dr Tim (easy 4km).
About this Event

These weekday women-only walks are happening regularly and are based in and around the Peak District. Led by Hill and Moorland Leader, Emily, we will discover the interesting history, geology and flora and fauna, as well as enjoy the beauty of the countryside with like-minded women.

As the name suggests, this is a walk that explores the Legend of Alderley Edge, a local legend attached to this beautiful and ancient site. Our historian and archaeologist, Dr Tim, will be with us every step of the way to tell the story of the Wizard, the white horse, and the sleeping knights, and to talk about the history and archaeology of this remarkable place. Stone age hunters, bronze age copper mining, holy wells, an Armada Beacon, medieval boundary stones, and more… some 8000 years of history will be explored on this trail, to a backdrop of stunning views over the cheshire plain and into the hills beyond.

This is a 4km loop with around 300ft of elevation on mixed terrain but mostly footpaths and trails with a couple of very gradual hills to climb. We will have lots of stops to listen to Tim and have a picnic lunch mid-way. This walk is classed as easy and is suitable for most. If you're new to hiking, this would be the perfect walk to get you started!

So whether you're looking to meet other outdoorsy women in the community, get ideas for routes for your own walks or runs, or simply want to inject a good dose of fresh air and views into your week, this walk is for you!

Distance: 2.5 miles/4km

Level: Easy/Moderate/Challenging

Elevation: 300ft

Time: 2.5-3.5 hours

Please note: If you book on this walk, expect an email from me a few days beforehand with a weather update and parking details. Check your spam account.

Who will be your guide?

I’m Emily (AKA @trigsandteeth on Instagram!) and I’m a Hill and Moorland Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire other women to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you! Feel free to check out my website: Peak Outdoor Coaching

We will be joined by Dr Tim Cambell-Green, a local historian and archeologist. Check out his website here: The Glossop Cabinet of Curiosities – Archaeology History Place (glossopcuriosities.co.uk)

Transport:

We will be meeting at the Alderely Edge National Trust Car Park, Macclesfield Rd, Macclesfield SK10 4UB (Google maps: https://maps.app.goo.gl/MgcGsJwE89F2o54i6). This is free to NT members or £5 for non-members (correct at time of typing).

I am always happy to car share from Glossop so do let me know if you're based in the area or need picking up from a nearby train station.

We aim to set off at 10am so please arrive on time.

What to bring:

Hiking boots/trainers with good grip

Snacks/lunch

Rucksack

Water (at least 1L)

Waterproofs

Warm layers

Hat and gloves

Walking poles (optional)

A small first aid kit with any personal medications

Terrain:

Mostly trails and footpaths. Some muddy areas after rain.

Toilets:

There are toilets at the car park.

Safety:

The whole point of the walk is to be an enjoyable and memorable experience for everyone so we will keep to a slow and steady pace. It's about taking in the views, learning about the history and geology of the area and being in nature, not about rushing to the finish line. Having said that, you are responsible for your own health and safety and with all outdoor activities, there can be risks involved. If you are unsure as to whether you are fit to come on this walk, please either consult your doctor or let me know your concerns. Please inform me of any medical conditions prior to the walk.

I am a qualified Hill and Moorland Leader and I am level 3 Outdoor First Aid trained so I will be on hand in case of an emergency.

Dogs:

Well-bahaved dogs are more than welcome to come along, however, there will be livestock around and potentially other dogs, so they will need to stay on a lead for parts of it. We will also be doing a lot of stopping to listen to Tim talk about the history, so please be mindful of this.

Refund Policy:

Refunds will only be given if the event is cancelled. If you can no longer attend you are more than welcome to sell your ticket to someone else but please let me know if you do so.

And FINALLY:

This walk will be going ahead whatever the weather, unless I deem the conditions dangerous so be ready to embrace the good old British weather! If I do have to cancel the walk for safety reasons, I will suggest one more date for the walk to be rearranged or you can redeem your ticket on one other walk on a date suitable to you.
