UPDATE: Due to the recent wet weather and flooding along sections of the waterway, this walk is unlikely to go ahead. We are considering an alternative walk for this date. Please watch Eventbrite for updates.

Group Walk: A Waterside Walk from the city to Aylestone Hall Gardens (linear route)

Saturday 2 November, 11am

Starting at High Cross monument, Jubilee Square, city centre

Finishing at Aylestone Hall Gardens by 12.30pm

2.6 miles, steady pace. Up to 90 minutes in total.

Due to the terrain, this is not an accessible route.

From the city centre, this walk passes through Castle Gardens before heading south on the canal path, taking in scenic waterside views all the way to Aylestone, with a couple of stops along the way for light information. The walk finishes in beautiful Aylestone Hall Gardens, adjacent to Aylestone Road. This is a linear route where we lead the outward journey only, allowing walkers to make their return journey by bus or on foot, as they prefer.

From the Gardens, it's an easy bus journey from Hall Lane bus stop (adjacent to Aylestone Road) directly back to town . Visit the Journey Planner and Choose How You Move website for travel information. Buses are frequent and the journey is about 20 minutes. Alternatively, walkers may opt to return independently on foot, following the waterway back to the city.

Information about the pace of our walks, what to wear/bring, the weather and much more can be found on our City Council Group Walks page.

Booking information

Please book via Eventbrite. Alternatively, phone 0116 373 7589 (Monday to Friday, 9am-5.30pm). We regret our phone line is not staffed at weekends or bank holidays. Booking is required for adults, but not required for children (under 16). Children are welcome, but must be accompanied by an adult.

If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel via Eventbrite or contact us by phone so we can allow others the opportunity to attend.

Travel to the walk

The start and finish locations are well served by buses. The Hall Lane bus stop is adjacent to Aylestone Road and just a couple of minutes walk from Aylestone Hall Gardens where the walk terminates. Buses back to town are frequent. To help plan your journey try the Choose How You Move Journey Planner tool. You can now pay bus fare via "tap on" and "tap off" with a preferred contactless payment method. The system will cap all fares at the best value adult ticket. For information about bus travel (routes, timetables, fares and tickets) visit the Choose How You Move Public Transport pages.

New Walkers

If you have not walked with Leicester City Council before we will ask you to complete our Walker Registration form in advance. You can do this online or by phone. You will receive an email with a link to the online form in the days leading up to the event. You only need to do this once and can attend any of our walks thereafter (subject to booking a place on Eventbrite). If you are unable to complete the form digitally, paper copies will be made available. The form is for adults only, children are not required to complete it.

Dress for the weather

Remember to dress appropriately for the weather. Our group walks will go ahead in most weather. We recommend the following:

  • Comfortable sturdy footwear
  • Bring a raincoat or umbrella in case of rain
  • On cooler days wear appropriate layers and a coat/jacket
  • On hot days wear sun protection (hat, sun screen)
  • Please bring a bottle of water with you, especially in warm weather.

Group size

Booking is required, so we can keep the group size manageable.

Self-guided routes

If you have been unable to book onto one of our group walks, or you prefer to explore with your family or friends, self-guided routes are available to download from the routes page of our Choose How You Move website or via the Go Jauntly smartphone app. For other ideas, do check out our Walk Inspiration page which features walk videos and quiz trails.

Enjoy exploring Leicester on foot.
