ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Join us for this one-day workshop with Artist/Professor Gary Chapman. Tuition is $100 plus $15 supply fee. To register, email [email protected] with your phone number.Students using oil paint will create a simple value study exploring a thorough understanding of The Anatomy of Light and Shadow. This exercise will help students understand and better utilize the properties of light and its effects, thereby empowering them to create more accurate and expressive representational work in any 2D medium. After each student completes the Value Study Assignment, they will be charged with creating a second painting of a simple object of their choice employing what they have learned in the Value Study assignment. The workshop will include PowerPoint presentations, work examples and critiques.
ABOUT THE INSTRCTOR: Gary Chapman is an artist/professor of Painting and Drawing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Chapman has had more than 80 solo exhibitions with institutions such as The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, The Arts Center of St. Petersburg, FL; University of Cincinnati, and the Indianapolis Art Center. He has also participated in numerous group and invitational exhibitions with regional, national and international venues.
Chapman was named a Joan Mitchell CALL Legacy Artist in 2013 and has received numerous grants and fellowships, including a 1996 National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship in Painting from the Southern Arts Federation and a 2002 and 199 Individual Artist Fellowships from the Alabama State Council on the Arts.
14 Paintings by Chapman have been purchased for the collections of 10 museums in the southeast region as well as by many corporate and private collections throughout the country.
