Frey will be speaking about “A Taste of the Past: Historical Recipes and the Stories They Tell.”This free presentation will be held at 7PM at First Presbyterian Church (189 Church Street, Marietta, GA 30060). Cobb County Genealogical Society members can also join via Zoom.

Description: Valerie J. Frey, author of the recent book Georgia's Historical Recipes (UGA Press) will discuss historical foodways in our state. The presentation will cover old cookbooks and recipes from the Atlanta area and Cobb County including her rediscovery of Marietta's 1885 cookbook by E. R. Tennent, House-Keeping in the Sunny South, now reprinted by UGA Press. The discussion will include information about her research and how cookbooks can provide information helpful to genealogists and local historians.
Bio: Valerie J. Frey is a writer from Athens. She holds degrees from the UGA and UT Knoxville. Valerie’s archives career began with a Junior Fellowship at the Library of Congress, and she went on to serve as Manuscripts Archivist at the Georgia Historical Society and the Georgia Archives. UGA Press published her foodways books, Preserving Family Recipes: How to Save and Celebrate Your Food Traditions (2015) and Georgia’s Historical Recipes: Seeking Our State’s Oldest Written Foodways and the Stories Behind Them (2025).
