Doctor of Occupational Therapy Program – Mental Health CourseA Show of Hands
A Show of Hands is a multi-modal literacy learning activity in which students engage in a range of sensory experiences that lead to increased self-awareness. The activity incorporates elements of mindfulness, and personal narratives that increase self-compassion, empathy, and therapeutic use of self. While creating a cast of one hand holding a small object that tells something about their history, experiences, and goals, students engage in self-reflection. This self-reflection leads to actively examining their values, beliefs, and attitudes. This exploration of student’s actions, thoughts, and beliefs directly affects many facets of client care, including planning quality interventions and developing healthy therapeutic environments. This activity is an intervention that students can one day use as a tool in their own occupational therapy practice.
The symposium is an exhibit that allows students to show off their work and present a narrative of the meaning behind their casting. We would like to invite family, community members, educators, and occupational therapists to enjoy the outcomes of the students’ projects.
Our Show of Hands event will be on Monday, March 24th from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. MST at Sonoran University 2164 E. Broadway Rd., Tempe, AZ., 2nd Floor which is Southern California University’s immersion lab space for the Doctor of OT program.
