Don Wade and his band “Sax Among Friends” will be performing live as part of our “Steering Through History” Lecture Series! Imagine you were traveling on the SS Sicamous, during various points of the ship’s history. What kind of music would you hear? What kind of music was popular at those times? Come to this lecture and find out!
Don Wade’s earliest musical influences were radio broadcasts during WW II, big band remotes and many fine classical music radio broadcasts. He came out of that era with a love for great classical music and the jazz tunes of the Big Bands!
“Sax Among Friends” includes musicians Don Wade (sax), Mel Zachary (piano), Graham Walker (bass) and Rod Rose (drums)!
Don Wade currently plays soprano, alto and tenor saxes with "Sax Among Friends", tenor sax with the South Okanagan Big Band, The Penticton Concert Band, and baritone sax with the Saxxafrass Saxophone Quartet.
From gospel to pop, rock to Latin, blues to jazz, whether playing solo or with a band, keyboardist Mel Zachary brings his stylistic versatility to every show. He performs regularly with "Sax Among Friends", the "SOCO Blues Crew", and "Yanti and Friends".
Graham Walker moved to the Okanagan in 2020, and has joined as many musical groups as he possibly can including "Sax Among Friends". Playing the bass, clarinet and guitar, as well as working full time, keeps him very busy, but he still finds time to sit in for special concerts.
Rod Rose is on "Sax Among Friends" drums. With over 55 years playing percussion instruments, Rod brings a wealth of experience to music. He has played everything from Classical to Pipe Band and everything in-between. The most important thing is Rod loves to have fun and you can feel it in the way he plays.
