About this Event
The highly anticipated book launch of A Sense of Arrival by Kevin Adonis Browne will feature readings by the author and special guests, Wendell Manwarren of 3 Canal; Jamie J. Philbert of Bois Academy; poets Shivanee Ramlochan (Everyone Knows I am a Haunting, 2017) and Alexandra Stewart (Offstage, 2020); Steffano Marcano of Next Level Devils, who was featured in Browne's High Mas (2019); and Mel Gabriel of Caribbean LookBook, whose portraits are featured in the book.
In A Sense of Arrival, published by Duke University Press, Browne presents a groundbreaking narrative of Caribbean blackness, blending essays, memoir, autotheory, and narrative verse with diverse visual media, including documentary photography, portraiture, and his own art installations. Browne examines the concept of arrival as a complex theory of being. Through this multimodal approach, he explores themes such as belonging, exile, love, loss, and the haunting presence of the Caribbean diaspora.
Praise for A Sense of Arrival
“Structured by a series of arrivals and becomings, A Sense of Arrival is formally challenging and inventive—a beautiful and welcome invitation to think what work nonfiction might do toward freedom and what it might be and require to work toward freedom. This book has much to offer; there is so much brilliance here. It will be an important addition to Caribbean thought and rhetoric, Caribbean studies, Black studies, cultural studies, photography and visual culture.”
Christina Sharpe, author of Ordinary Notes
“A Sense of Arrival is a brilliant, beautiful, and unorthodox contribution to Black studies debates and to the reconceptualization of Black Being...Browne’s highly original and philosophical notion of arrival...mov[es] the reader from mere identity or even subjectivity to the ontological question of the nature of being itself.
Michelle Ann Stephens, author of Skin Acts: Race, Psychoanalysis, and the Black Male Performer
