The third annual A Run For The Ages! In
2018 I was running Lazarus Lake's Last Annual Vol State race through Tennessee. About 100km from the finish line in a town called Manchester other runners told me about another of Laz's races that takes place in that town, an event called "A Race For The Ages"
I made some great friendships during that race, and now every year I follow those friends when they travel to Manchester on the Labor Holiday weekend to run ARFTA. I love the format, and like most of Laz's races, the concept is quite brilliant.
So I have received permission from Laz to use his idea and invite you to run the third A Run Across The Ages on the Western Australia Day Long Weekend 2023, that's Friday 2 June until Monday June 5. The way it works is you will run a 4km loop along the coast at Sorrento / Hillarys for the number of hours equivalent to your age. So if you are 52 years old, you will run for 52 hours, if you are 82 years old you can run for 82 hours. If you are younger than 40, you will run for 40 hours, no matter what your age.
There will be a staggered start, so the oldest runners starts first, and everyone finishes at 5pm Monday afternoon. Who will run the furthest? Laz's races have been won by people ranging in age from 49 to 68. However ours isn't a race, just a personal challenge to see how many kilometres you can total in your hours.
The course will run right through Hillary's Boat Harbour, right by a fish and chips shop, an ice cream parlour, a cafe and a Mexican takeaway. Place an order as you run past without breaking stride! On the southern side of the course is a BP Service Station which is open 24 Hours. The Breakwater bar is just a few hundred metres away if you feel like a pint. The start will be at Sorrento Beach southern carpark, the toilets and showers there are open 24 hours.
There is no cost, no medals, and no help provided. You are by yourself. You can choose to have a nap in your car (if you are not moved on by a ranger), take a sleeping bag out onto the beach, nip home for a nap if it's within reach, or book a room at Hillary's Resort for the duration, the choice is yours. Or just run the whole lot. How many hours you dedicate to running is totally up to you.
We'll setup a Strava Club so you can share your distance achieved with others and so others can follow your running online.
