Radical History of Banners by Alice Gabb

Come join us for a fascinating talk on the history of radical banner design by Lettering Artist and Banner Maker, Alice Gabb, as she takes us through some of her favourite moments; it's going to be totally rad!

From secret societies, to peace campaigning, to trade unions, Alice picks out examples that have inspired and shaped her own practice, exploring the visual culture of social movements and resistance.

Discover the powerful stories behind these colourful banner creations at the Chingford United Reformed Church. Get ready to be inspired by the legacy of these radical symbols throughout history. Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to explore the artistic and political significance of banners!

One of the headline events of the North Chingford Art Trail; a talk by artist and activist Alice Gabb on the power of banners in political and protest contexts, hosted by Elizabeth Salazar Guerra.

This is the second North Chingford Art Trail, being held to showcase local artists and to encourage residents in the rest of Waltham Forest and beyond to come, visit and be inspired by the area’s history and nature.

Getting to North Chingford is easy. Chingford Station (one of the venues) is on the Overground line from Liverpool Street and is also well-served by buses.

One of the best things about North Chingford is having Epping Forest on the doorstep. For those wishing to explore the forest a good place to start is the Epping Forest Visitor Centre (The View), another of the venues, which is a 10 minute walk from Chingford Station.

The forest can be explored on foot or by bike. Bikes, including electric mountain bikes, can be hired from the local bike shop (https://gofurthercycling.co.uk/).

The North Chingford Art trail is in a relatively compact area and every venue could be visited in a morning. All of the venues will be open on the day of the talk. So make a day of it; do the art trail, have a walk or cycle in the forest, and treat yourself to a nice lunch at one of the many and varied cafes, bars and restaurants in Station Road.
