This Poverty Simulation will allow you to rethink poverty as you enter the real-life challenges that too many families experience in Dallas.
About this Event

Poverty is a reality for far too many in Dallas County. This interactive learning experience offers participants an opportunity to gain new perspectives about the day-to-day realities of life with a shortage of money, resources, or options while experiencing abundant stress. This powerful tool is used to educate and inform leaders, professionals, volunteers, and community members about the impact of poverty in a non-threatening, productive environment.

Participants are assigned designated roles within low-income families, from single parents trying to care for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on a fixed income. During the simulation, each family must obtain food, shelter, and other basic needs while interacting with various community resources. Although “play” money, props, fictional scenarios, and time limits are used, the simulation is not a game. It is a tool to enable participants to view poverty from different angles in an experiential setting.

After the experience, a panel discussion will occur where participants will hear from community leaders, individuals, and various non-profits on how poverty is being addressed in the Dallas area, now and in the future.

Our goal is to allow participants to step into the real-life situations of others and be able to identify areas of change that can directly impact the effects of poverty on our communities.
