The pamphlet can be sewn and folded into an elegant binding that stands alone as an artist book or be produced as an edition. Participants explore the gel printing process as a way of creating printed covers. Each participant will print a series using found objects, stamps, stencils, and colored inks. Participants will proceed to more complex sewn books with single and three-section text blocks using the gel prints as covers and end pages. Participants will leave with 6-7 folded and sewn pamphlet structures. No prior experience required!Student Supply List:
bone folder, x-acto-knife or olfa cutter, extra blades, metal ruler at 15" long, mechanical pencil and eraser, scissors, awl, cutting mat, Japanese drill punch, waxed linen thread (note: instructor will also have some waxed linen), materials for gel printing - laces, dried leaves (fresh leaves will also work), pressed flowers, feathers, buttons with flat surfaces, ribbons, textured fabrics, bits of screen, mesh bags from oranges or produce (nice textures), stencils and/or stamps, any item with a textured surface (but not sharp), journal or paper for taking notes.

Instructor Bio: Mary Beth Boone is a book artist and letterpress printer living in Greensboro, NC. She began making books about 35 years ago. Recent exhibits include Winter Show at the Green Hill Center for NC Art in Greensboro, NC in 2020; the 10th Annual Juried Exhibition at the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio in 2022, and Degrees of Commitment: Climate, Ecosystems and Society at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in Gatlinburg, TN in 2023. Her work was included in 1000 Artists Books and 500 Handmade Books, volume 2. A Winter Residency at the Penland School of Craft in 2012 inspired her to locate and purchase a Vandercook SP 15 letterpress. She prints under the imprint Purple Pumpkin Press. Her work is in private and public collections. Mary Beth holds an MFA from the University of SC, Columbia.
