On December 6 and 7 Newton Baroque invites you to usher in the Advent season with music for Advent and Christmas from seventeenth century North Germany. Many Christmas traditions in the United States, including the Christmas tree, have their roots in North Germany and Scandinavia, and this program offers music from that same heritage. Our concert this year presents a progression of works for Advent, Christmas, and Epiphany. The music ranges from intimate and contemplative to joyful and exuberant. We are performing at First Lutheran Church in downtown Boston and at St Elizabeth’s Church in Sudbury to take advantage of two of the finest baroque organs in the Boston area.
The concert will feature Andrus Madsen at the organ, with Susanna Ogata and Nicole Vega on violin and Douglas Kelley on viola da gamba. Anastasia Black and Rozime Lindsey will sing cantatas by Buxtehude, Nicolaus Bruhns, Christian Geist, and Giovanni Rigatti. Susanna Ogata and Douglas Kelley will perform Dietrich Buxtehude’s rollicking Sonata in B flat major. You will not want to miss Andrus playing Michael Prätorius’ Nun lob mein Seel den Herrn.
