A Collaboration between FIU Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, Florida Grand Opera, and Coral Gables Congregational United Church of Christ. Featuring Music from Domenico Cimarosa’s El matrimonio secreto.Join us for a very special program that explores life in exile for Cubans in South Florida. “A New Life” examines how cultures and traditions bend and reshape when confronted by the realities of migration and the inevitable shock and initial mistrust that ensue when a people find themselves living in a new land. With mass emigration from Cuba reaching an all-time high in the 80s, how did Cuban society re-create itself in South Florida?
Our program is inspired by Florida Grand Opera’s inventive reimagining of Domenico Cimarosa’s Il Matrimonio Segreto, an 18th-century Italian comedic opera reset in a Cuban household of 1980s Miami.
“A New Life” features the glorious voices of Florida Grand Opera Studio Artists and the spoken word of historian Mike Bustamante; author Ana Menéndez; and author and poet Uva de Aragón.
A reception follows the presentation.
