Om Musik is a project that aims at bringing together multiple musical traditions from all over the world, creating a new homogeneous identity. The starting point for this concept can be found in the music from Bollywood movies, and how it blends Indian elements with many influences from American, European, African, and Arabic traditions. Tunes from Bollywood productions are used as a source of inspiration to further develop a musical language that is both universal (because of its multicultural nature) and, at the same time, very much tied to the sensibility of each individual member of the band. A transformational process is thus started, one that spans over multiple years and yields a unique repertoire that keeps evolving into new shapes. We have also been making our own original tunes with influences from Indian classical and western music which u can hear in the concert.
The concept behind Om Musik was conceived by Keerthana Kunalan, the lead vocalist and founder of the band. She is a Sri Lankan Tamil singer, lyricist, composer, and a medical doctor by profession. Having grown up listening to and learning a variety of musical styles, Keerthana has become a true experimentalist in her art.
Pop, jazz, funk, folk, Indian classical, carnatic singing...these are just some of the tags one could use to describe the music played by Om Musik, but in the end it is really about a mix of all these styles, in a well-tuned proportion, as spices in a good curry.
