Karel Anton’s poetic silent film A MAY TALE (1926), adapted from Vilém Mrštík’s impressionistic novel, unfolds in ten lyrical movements tracing the intertwined fates of four sisters—Helenka, Gusta, Albína, and Anna—daughters of an aging forester. Love, illness, rebellion, and moral judgment ripple through village balls, convent halls, and city nights. This landmark of Czech silent cinema, once fragmented, has been painstakingly restored with new intertitles presented in a new English translation by Czech Cultural Center President Paul Burik. A MAY TALE will be accompanied by a new score featuring Czech folk music performed by members of Cleveland’s own Harmonia ensemble.Parking info:There are numerous garages conveniently located close to the library, including Huntington Building Garage, 777 Rockwell, and ABM Rockwell Garage.
