A mantra is a word, sound, or phrase that is repeated during meditation or spiritual practice to aid in concentration, mindfulness, or spiritual development. The term comes from the Sanskrit words "man" (mind) and "tra" (tool or instrument), meaning "a tool for the mind." Mantras are often seen as a way to focus the mind, calm thoughts, and invoke spiritual energy or blessings.Join us for a 2 hour workshop on mantra meditation at The Well on January 25th, from 2-4pm. In this experiential workshop you will be introduced to ancient mantra practices from both India and South America, exploring a range of mantra practices, from the most basic seed syllable bijas, on to sacred bhajans, short repetitive devotional mantras set to melody utilizing a call and response approach.
We will also be chanting sacred medicine songs from the Amazon called icaros, which are said to be gifts from the plants to the indigenous peoples of South America, namely in Peru, Ecuador and Brazil. These beautiful invocations are said to medicinal on their own, with special healing properties.
New to chanting, singing? Learn how to unlock your voice with the harmonium and shruti box, explore basic warmup practices and daily routines for extending your range and improving your pitch. We will also discuss a variety of instruments that are used in chanting and kirtan such as the Ektar and other drone instruments.
