We are starting our year off proper, deep-diving into the 1997 masterpiece 'Around the Fur' by Deftones.The album represents a pivotal moment in Deftones’ discography, refining the raw aggression of 'Adrenaline' (1994) into a more expansive and emotionally charged sound. The album is defined by its dense, layered guitar tones, dynamic rhythmic shifts, and Chino Moreno’s wide vocal range. Rather than relying solely on heaviness, Deftones emphasized atmosphere, texture, and rhythmic space to play as crucial a role as distortion.
Recorded under demanding and often volatile conditions, Around the Fur captures a sense of urgency and emotional tension that became central to its identity. Translating into an album that not only expanded Deftones’ audience but also reshaped expectations for heavy music. Its long-term impact is evident in its continued influence and remains widely regarded as a foundational release that helped redefine the boundaries of heavy rock in the late 1990s. We will be listening to the album front-to-back on our Hi-Fi Sound System.
This will be paired alongside an all-vinyl DJ set by C-Minus. Touring DJ for Deftones, Korn, & Foo Fighters to name a few & certified member of the legendary Fantasik 4our DJ crew.
Closing out the night with a live-set by Sueños. An alternative shoegaze/post-punk band formed in the Inland Empire in 2021, currently signed to Neon Bloodbath Records.
