Join us for a personal look at Alexander Lindsay (6th Earl of Balcarres), and his history as a slave and plantation owner in Jamaica.
About this Event

A family story told by Ripton 'Lord' Lindsay, the great, great, great, great grandchild of Alexander Lindsay (6th Earl of Balcarres) and great x 4 grandnephew of Jeremiah. Ripton will give an in-depth insight as to why the 6th Earl got into slave owning, how he became one of the most powerful and successful slave and plantation owner in Jamaica, the reason why how he also gave land to some of his slaves and made sure his slaves had a proper burial when they died on any of his plantations. The story that history never told.

He will give an insight to James Lindsay (7th Earl of Balcarres and Ripton's great x 3 granduncle). The 7th Earl's visits to Jamaica, and where the 7th Earl really got the last design from in order to make the final remodelling of Haigh Hall. Ripton will also touch on the history of Jamaica at that time in regards to slave owners, slaves and the British Empire.
