Born in Virginia and sold at age twelve to a Louisiana cotton plantation, Myers courageously escaped and joined the Union Army, serving as a drummer boy and rising to the rank of first sergeant. After the Civil War, he settled in Nyack, NY, becoming a vital part of the community an a charter member of New York’s first Black Grand Army of the Republic post and an active leader at St. Philip's A.M.E.
