About this Event
Presented in the Omotesenke tradition of tea ceremony in the Tatami room, this event offers a chance to experience chanoyu while enjoying a seasonal display of Japanese dolls.
From February 11th to March 3rd, the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre will showcase Hina dolls in the Ellipse Lobby, a custom for celebrating girls' health and happiness. These dolls, representing the Imperial Court, are displayed leading up to Hinamatsuri (Doll's Day, March 3). A selection of dolls will be brought up to the Tatami room, adding a cultural dimension to the tea ceremony.
The Japanese Tea Ceremony is a practice that emphasizes harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. It is a ritual involving the preparation and presentation of matcha, a powdered green tea. The ceremony engages sight, smell, taste, and touch. The movements of the practitioners, the utensils, and the atmosphere contribute to a sense of peace.
On March 1st, ticket holders will be served matcha and okashi (Japanese sweets). The okashi are chosen to complement the matcha and suit the season and occasion. This is a chance to taste Japanese tea and sweets and learn about the tea ceremony. Practitioners will answer questions and share their knowledge. While the doll display in the Ellipse lobby is open to all visitors, tickets are required for the tea ceremony in the Tatami room and include matcha and okashi.
Tea ceremonies take place at:
- 11:00 AM
- 12:30 PM
- 2:00 PM
- 3:30 PM
About the Instructor
Sixteen years ago, Ishii-sensei began practicing pottery as a hobby and became captivated by the beauty of matcha tea bowls. Seeking a deeper understanding and wishing to create them by hand, he attended a tea ceremony under the guidance of an Omotesenke sensei. Through this process, he came to strongly feel that creating matcha tea bowls requires not only an understanding of their form, but also a serious and authentic study of the tea ceremony itself. It was at that moment that he decided to formally begin his practice.
He hopes guests feel connected to the tea ceremony's calmness and spiritual depth.
