A Holistic Perspective on Eating Disorder Treatment: Practical Guidelines for Psychoanalysts
About this Event

In this workshop, we view disordered eating as serving needed self-organizing and self-regulating functions. Attending to the complex interplay of one’s social location (e.g., race, ethnicity, sexuality & gender), biology, temperament, trauma, and attachment history, participants will learn how to engage the patient’s curiosity about the role their symptoms serve in managing and dissociating from painful affect states. In the spirit of direct inquiry and collaboration, tracking the patient’s thoughts, feelings, and behavior, the clinician prompts the patient’s self-reflection and self-compassion. From this holistic perspective, which draws on self-psychological and relational theories, along with harm reduction and motivational interviewing techniques, the clinician addresses the impact of dysregulated eating on the patient’s mood and behavior, empowering the patient to make desired changes.

Heather Ferguson, LCSW, is a psychoanalyst in private practice in NYC. She is faculty and supervisor at the Institute for the Psychoanalytic Study of Subjectivity, the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, and the Manhattan Institute for Psychoanalysis, Certificate Program in Trauma Studies. She is Co-Book Review Editor for Psychoanalysis, Self and Context, and has written about eating disorder treatment from a self-psychological, relational, and neurobiological perspective.
