Marghasyow ha MarghasbyghanWhat connects a sunfish to the Scouts and Guides, the astronomer royal, the attorney general, a VC won at Omdurman, Carr's Biscuits and a deadly piece of liquorice? Or "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" to "Abide with Me", a Cornish missionary and a shipwreck, or the Marazion militia to a mayor engaged in privateering and wrecking, the press gang, the Ottoman Sultan and German motor racing. Find out when you join Ralph for a fun walk through Marazion's history, including its myths, legends and markets, the Cornish origins of the name, the murder of Mack the Knife, outlaws and sheriffs, death on the beach, the French attack, merchants, smugglers, privateers and Royal Navy heroes, plus "this train don't stop Marazion Saturdays", 1595 to 1995 and all that, plus much more.
Ralph Jelbart is chair of the Marazion Museum Trust. Born in Marazion, he attended school in the town and in Penzance, before university and a career in London and overseas, but Marazion always remained the family home. With ancestry in the town stretching back over 300 years he has taken a keen interest in the town's history since joining the museum team in late 2022.
