A Guided Journey: Mindfulness of Mind for Kids with Shannon Smith

We invite parents, relatives, caregivers and kids to join us for a morning exploring mindfulness and compassion at the Durango Dharma Center.
Mindfulness of mind can sound tricky, but for kids, it's a simple, playful adventure into our own heads! It's the practice of noticing the thoughts and feelings that pop into our minds without getting stuck on them.
Imagine your mind is like the sky. Some days it's bright and sunny, other days a few clouds float by, and sometimes big, gray storm clouds roll through. Mindfulness of mind is learning to see these thoughts—the happy, sad, or silly ones—as just clouds in the sky. We notice them, but we don't have to chase them, yell at them, or get carried away by them. We learn that we are not our minds; we are the one watching the clouds.
This practice helps kids realize they are the observer of their thoughts, not their thoughts themselves. It gives them the freedom to decide what they want to do with those thoughts, rather than just reacting to them.
All are welcome to attend, no experience is necessary.
COST: There is no registration fee, and donations are always welcome. If you can, please sign up (for free) so we have a sense of who and how many will be coming, but if you forget, please simply show up.
DATE: Sunday, October 5 from 10:30-12:00
LOCATION: Durango Dharma Center, 1800 East Third Avenue, Suite 109 in Durango
ABOUT SHANNON SMITH: Shannon Smith has lived with good old-fashioned dukkha (suffering, stress, discomfort and destructive mind states) her whole life. The last 20+ years this has become much more enjoyable thanks to a Dharma practice that has included meditation, retreats, study, therapy, books (lots of books), and several good wonderful kind-hearted teachers.
She has been integrating Dharma practice and addiction recovery practices resulting in nearly 30 years of sobriety. In 2014, she stepped out of a successful corporate career to become a Co-Founder to a Buddhist-Based Recovery Treatment Center working with recovering addicts and their families. During this time, she also graduated from a four-year teacher training program with Against the Stream Buddhist Meditation Society and had her first son. Shannon has taught meditation, led recovery groups and co-facilitated Year-to-Live groups since 2008.
Currently, she lives in beautiful Paonia, Colorado and enjoys being mom to two active boys and running the Secular Dharma Foundation with her husband Dave Smith.
