In 1933, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers touched foreheads on the set of a Broadway-style production dance number for RKO Radio Picture's new musical, Flying Down To Rio, and, in the course of 8 additional musicals over the next 6 years, danced and sang their way into Hollywood history.Certainly Astaire's and Hermes Pan's superb choreography had a lot to do with the magic of those films; as did the chemistry between Astaire and Rogers; and RKO's innovative approach to the film musical during those years. But just as importantly was due to the studio's determination to engage the top Broadway songwriters of the day: Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin, Jerome Kern, Dorothy Fields, Oscar Hammerstein and more.
Chuck Redd and company offer up a fine selection of gems from these peerless films.
