About this Event

This winter, step back in time and join us for a Dickens themed Sketchcrawl, exploring the locations and scenes from A Christmas Carol, Oliver Twist, Little Dorrit, Great Expectations and more. You'll uncover hidden alleyways, yards and magical corners of the city, whilst drawing the sights and characters from Dickens novels under the guidance of artist Gary Andrews.

We start this tour from The Monument Column and will end the sketchcrawl with a hot drink and treat at The Charles Dickens Museum and cafe; so please wear comfy shoes and warm clothing.

This is a 3 hour sketchcrawl from 10:00am to 1:00pm so an explorer's spirit is essential. The sites we will be discovering are some of the most fascinating around London and perfect for urban explorers, doodlers, photographers and history lovers. All levels welcome and ticket holders will receive some wonderful drawing goodies courtesy of , so turn up and get sketching. You'll receive a pack of 3 Black Derwent Fineline Pens and an A5 Mixed Tone Paper Pad but you are more than welcome to bring your own drawing tools. Use your imagination to create Jacob Marley in a door knocker or watch Gary as he shows you how to draw The Ghost of Christmas Past!

We'll end the drawing tour with a complimentary hot drink at the ever so cosy Pickwick Cafe at the Charles Dickens Museum. Why not explore the museum afterwards or head into Covent Garden or further field and enjoy the festive lights or some Christmas shopping.

We ask that you arrive at least 10 minutes early in order to sign in and receive your materials. There are a maximum of 20 spaces on this tour and we will send further details of meeting times and locations to all our sketchers a week prior to the event, so don't be a scrooge and grab a ticket pronto! Gary may even be dressed up in Victorian garb!

About Gary...

Born in 1961, Gary graduated from Exeter College of Art & Design in 1983 at which point he fell into a career in animation. Over the years he worked on many commercials and pop promos, had a spell at Disney, animated several Beatrix Potter characters as well as Toad from The Wind in the Willows. In 2007 he started working on Fireman Sam and directed the show from 2010 to 2018. He is also a prolific illustrator and can often be seen on the pages of Private Eye, where he has been illustrating the ‘Sylvie Krin’ stories for over 30 years.

He married his wife Joy in 2004 and they have 2 children. Joy died in October 2017 as a result of Sepsis aged just 41. Since her death, his ‘Doodleaday’ diary has gone viral, leading to several radio, podcast and TV appearances where he is passionate to talk about 'positive grieving’.
