About this Event
Experience the inner workings of a freighter and tug like never before with A Day in the Life Tour: Chief Engineer — an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at life as a chief engineer aboard the Col. James M. Schoonmaker Museum Ship and the Museum Tug Ohio on Saturday, May 17 at 11 am or 1 pm. This is more than just a tour — it's a rare opportunity to explore areas of our historic ships that are typically off-limits to the public and get an insider’s view of the hidden spaces that keep these vessels running.
During this immersive 90-minute experience, you’ll follow in the footsteps of a chief engineer and uncover the secrets of ship operations, including access to “hard-hat only” locations like:
- The Schoonmaker’s Owner’s Galley — a rarely seen, behind-the-scenes workspace.
- The Schoonmaker’s Engine Room — explore the ship’s powerhouse and the lowest points of the boat.
- The Tug Ohio’s Engine Room — see how this historic vessel was powered and maintained.
- The Ohio’s Forward Cabins — step into the crew's living quarters and experience what life was like aboard the tug.
From the Schoonmaker's original boiler bricks to the latest restoration efforts, you'll get up close and personal with maritime history — all from the unique perspective of a chief engineer.
