About this Event

The Instituto Cervantes Leeds, in collaboration with the University of Leeds, is pleased to present the event entitled ‘The Gypsy Community in the Collective Imagination: From Western Cinema to 21st Century Video Clips’ by Noelia Cortés, a talented essayist and poet, coordinated by Professor Duncan Wheeler of the University of Leeds, where they will discuss the representation of the Gypsy people in Western cinema.

Noelia Cortés is a poet and essayist. She published her first collection of poems, Del mar y muerte, at the end of 2021, the same year that the magazine Mujer Hoy named her one of the women who will transform the future. Her essay La higuera de las gitanas was selected for the exhibition Gitanos de hoy at the Andalusian Parliament in 2022. In 2023 she examines the racism associated with Lola Flores in a chapter of the essay Flores por Lola. In 2024, she republishes her poetry and acts as creative advisor for the documentary FARRUQUITO (Grupo Izen).

Professor Duncan Wheeler will be joined by Noelia Cortés to discuss the status and representation of the Roma people in Spain, both historically and today. Their talk will cover a wide range of topics, from the use of Gypsy extras in Clint Eastwood's westerns filmed in Almería in the 1960s to issues of cultural appropriation in relation to the promotion of flamenco.

This event will be held in English and Spanish.
