About this Event
Join us for an illuminating conversation with former Supreme Court Justice Anthony M. Kennedy as he discusses insights from his new book, Life, Law & Liberty: A Memoir (2025) with Provost Jenny S. Martinez.
Throughout his thirty-year tenure on the US Supreme Court, Justice Anthony M. Kennedy authored landmark opinions on some of the most contested issues in American society, including abortion, same-sex marriage, and free speech. Often defying expectations, Kennedy’s pursuit of equal justice helped him define the law of the land for a generation. Life, Law & Liberty is a reflection on Kennedy's nuanced role as a judge and his life story—filled with personal heartbreak and incredible accomplishment—as a precocious boy from Sacramento who went on to become the man Chief Justice John Roberts describes as “a special combination of legal acumen, collegiality, and kindness.”
The Stanford community is honored to welcome Justice Kennedy back to his alma mater on this special occasion with Provost Martinez, who will bring her legal expertise to this riveting discussion about how civility, decency, and ethics are essential to public life.
Books will be available for purchase at the event.

He was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1975. He wrote nearly one thousand opinions over more than forty years on the federal bench.
