About this Event
A graduate of Douglass College, Susan Mandell was the cantor of Congregation Emanu-El of Edison, New Jersey, for 14 years in a time before women were formally ordained. As a pioneering woman in the field of Jewish liturgical music, Cantoress Mandell’s story tells us much about the entry of women into religious leadership roles in the 20th century. And yet, her story was nearly lost to history, and even to the congregation that she served. In conversation with Cantor Kalix Jacobson of Temple Emanuel of South Hills, who rediscovered this history through their research, Cantoress Mandell will share her experience as one of the only female cantors of the 1960s and 1970s. In addition, ethnomusicologist Dr. Gordon Dale will offer historical framing for her experience.
The event will take place on Thursday, February 29, 2024 in the Albers Schonberg Room, Kathleen W. Ludwig Global Village Living Learning [DBM1] Center, located at 9 Suydam St, New Brunswick, NJ 08901
