We welcome back Deborah Gould to Curtis to discuss her new novel, "Kate Meader" (August, 2023). "Kate Meader has had her share of hard times, but she finds stability as cook at the poorhouse, where she feeds the homeless residents of Gardiner, Maine. In 1900, a new inmate appears at the city farm, a Civil War veteran named Nicholas Dale, and Kate's life takes another turn."
Onsite book sales available at this event through Gulf of Maine Books.
Deborah grew up in Portland and Brunswick, Maine—a member of the 1965 Class at Brunswick High School. After college in New Hampshire, she moved to Boston and worked for Houghton Mifflin Company, but soon came to her senses and moved back to Maine; she’s been here ever since.
She is the author of The Eastern novels: The Early Years and Later On. She was a Maine Literary Award short fiction finalist in 2013 and, a year later, won that award. Her historical novel The Early Years was a 2016 Maine Literary Award book finalist; her contemporary novel Household was endorsed by Patrisha McLean, founder of Finding Our Voices, a non-profit agency providing support and resources for victims of domestic violence.
She also volunteers for the Gardiner Public Library, working in the Archives Room where she uncovers and celebrates the lives of people like Kate Meader.
A founding member of the Cumberland Street Writers, she is a three-season resident of Brunswick and summers on Flying Pond in Mount Vernon, Maine.
