Looking for a good reason to get out into the open air this August? With the month often quiet and uneventful, here’s the perfect opportunity to come together for a meaningful and uplifting local event. Join us on 16th August in marking the significant day of remembrance and community that is the 80th Anniversary of VJ Day – Victory over Japan Day plus the 2nd Anniversary of our Wimbledon Common And Village Walk & Talk group. Date: Saturday, 16th August 2025
Time: 10:30 AM – 12.30 PM
Walk duration: About 1 hour
Location Start: Wimbledon War Memorial, High Street, London SW19 5AZ
This special event brings together two powerful reasons to gather: To honour and remember the bravery and sacrifice of all those who served in the Far East during the Second World War on VJ Day (actually Friday 15th), and to celebrate two years of Walk & Talk, your local initiative that has helped strengthen our community through conversation, connection, and shared steps.
Whether you come to reflect, reconnect, or simply enjoy the fresh air, we’d love to see you there. All are welcome. Come with family, bring a friend, walk your dog, or just as you are.
The Wimbledon Common and Village Walk & Talk group are hosting the walk
Event Highlights:
A short, slowish walk around the Commons near the Village including:
- Personal reflections of post war days from the Far East
- A poem titled “Nation Shall Speak Unto Nation”
- Reading from Elizabeth Beresford (creator of the Wombles) who was a Wren in London on the day VJ was announced
- The Reverend Farodoye: "Blessed are the peace makers", a commitment to peace
Post walk 2nd anniversary refreshments, coffee and cakes in the Village.
Please join us in remembering the past, celebrating the present, and walking together into the future. Looking forward to seeing you at the Wimbledon War Memorial.
