Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, and Missionary Ridge are Chattanooga’s recognized Civil War battles.
About this Event

But, there’s another, even longer one that’s largely been forgotten, in large measure because there’s been limited access to where it happened—The Battle for the Bridges, railroad bridges in particular. The South Chickamauga Creek Greenway is helping to bring this Chattanooga battle, often one more with nature as opposed to another side, into the light. Join Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park Historian Jim Ogden and Railroad Historian Mark Brainard for this two hour, two and one half mile hike on the South Chickamauga Creek Greenway and into another chapter of Chattanooga’s Civil War but interconnected history.

The hike will begin in the parking lot of the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum, 4119 Cromwell Road, Chattanooga, Tennessee. While mostly level, the route does include some descents and climbs on the Greenway itself. Between interpretive stops, we will hike at an approximately two and a half to three mile per hour pace. Comfortable, supportive footwear, clothing appropriate to the weather, and a water bottle are recommended.
