About this Event

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND

‘Christmas’ will certainly be celebrated in style at the library this year when the stylish and critically acclaimed production of Charles Dickens’ classic Novella takes to the stage for just one performance only.

As performed at His Majesty’s Theatre, Dickens' celebrated classic is brought to life in this delightful 'One Man Show' adapted and performed by Myaree based professional actor Robbie Burns. Originally from the UK. Robbie now lives with his family in Perth. “This adaptation was a work of love” says Robbie, “I always wanted to create a one-man style presentation of this popular tale.” This production embodies twenty-three different characters from this festive masterpiece, without changing costumes or makeup.

“During the COVID enforced break from performing, I decided the time was right to sit down and create my own adaptation of this well love Dickens classic story. Its original length takes almost six hours to narrate, and I needed to reduce this to a more acceptable 60 minute performance length. I have kept all the popular sections and the important characters that Ebenezer Scrooge encounters.” Explains Robbie “The next challenge was to memorise the hour-long performance monologue…!”

About the story…
On Christmas Eve, a cold-hearted Ebenezer Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his business partner, Jacob Marley, heralding that three spirits will come to haunt Scrooge.
The Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future project the errors of Scrooge’s past and present and how they could lead to a calamitous end. The ghosts remind Scrooge of his optimistic childhood and his rotten relationships with relatives and colleagues alike.
He witnesses the struggles of his clerk Bob Cratchit and family, particularly Bob’s son, the weak but optimistic Tiny Tim. Inevitably the ghost of Christmas Yet-to-Come echoes how his frightful behaviour will lead to loneliness and despair.

“It’s remarkable to watch, the sheer storytelling prowess sends a crackling thrill up every spine”. Fourth Wall Media

At the end of the performance Robbie Burns holds a free Q & A session for the audience and is happy to chat about how the show was created and about how Charles Dickens had a great influence on what we now celebrate as a ‘Traditional Christmas’. Join us for a festive evening of fun and come dressed in your finest Christmas Garb.

Suitable for ages 12+, please do not bring anyone younger than 12 to the performance.
