A winter’s night. A haunted cinema. A cursed film. A town where the dead still whisper…dare you join us?If that quickens your pulse, then step into the shadows for a chilling night of folklore, phantoms and vintage horror with the King's Lynn Community Cinema Club.
On Thursday 20 November, the cinema club is teaming up with the Norfolk Folklore Society and Reel Connections to summon Jacques Tourneur’s cult 1942 masterpiece Cat People onto the big screen at the Majestic Cinema: a venue with ghost stories of its own.
Before the feature, folklorists Siofra Connor and Stacia Briggs will guide audiences through tales where the boundary between myth and nightmare blurs. Siofra will unearth the legend of Norfolk’s very own big cat, the infamous Norfolk Puma, while Stacia will explore the secrets of the Majestic itself and introduce a film that stalks the line between desire and dread, all with the Society’s trademark shiver and a smile.
The evening begins at 7pm with eerie folk horror artwork from Matt Willis (Shuck Zine/The Folklore Box) with exclusive posters available to buy and a free commemorative badge for all who dare to attend. The event also includes a short archive film from the East Anglian Film Archive, introduced by Guy Martin of Reel Connections.
Then at 8pm the lights dim for Cat People: a taut, terrifying fable of desire, transformation and death, where shadows conceal more than they reveal. You’ll never look at passion, or your pet cat, in quite the same light again.
Ian Barton, chair of King's Lynn Community Cinema Club, said "This is the latest of our 'themed' evenings, which offer more than just a regular film screening; you'll be informed, entertained and perhaps just a little spooked! Our last special 'An Evening with Lee Miller and Antony Penrose', sold out completely so I urge you to get your tickets as soon as you can."
The Cinema Club regularly shows films at the Majestic that are free for members to attend. Membership costs only £20 for a six-month season of 8 films, and anyone over 18 is welcome to join at any time, with discounts given for members joining part way through a season. Non-members are welcome to attend any regular screening by paying £6 cash on the door. Further details can be obtained from the Cinema Club website at klccc.uk, Facebook page or by emailing [email protected]
