About this Event
King Brutus of Troy, great grandson of Aeneas, left his native Italy for Greece, where he liberated the Trojans and led them to the island ‘in the Western Ocean’ promised him by the gods. Brutus landed right here, in Totnes, setting foot on the Brutus Stone and becoming the first King of Britain, which he named after himself. Totnes was where they faced their first terrible challenge – war against the Giant Gogmagog and his fearful tribe, who wished to exterminate Brutus and the Trojan race forever.
Writer and broadcaster Anthony Adolph has been fascinated by the myth of Brutus since a childhood visit to his aunt in Totnes and has spent decades ferreting out the Brutus myth back to its earliest roots. On the eve of Dartington Morris’s The Amazing Adventures of Brutus, discover how Totnes was drawn into the heart of the most arcane and magnificent of the origin myths of the British Isles.
Join us for a talk at The East Gate Bookshop with Anthony Adolph, author of Brutus of Troy, and the Quest for the Ancestry of the British (Pen & Sword paperback 2020), in conjunction with Dartington Morris’s ‘The Amazing Adventures of Brutus’ event the following day
